Internet Entrepreneurs: Avoid "Blind Sheep" Marketing
I have wonderful news! Tuesday, November, 3, 2003 at 10:18 PM I became a grandma! My daughter-in-law gave birth to a healthy, beautiful 8-pound baby boy. His name is Ewan and he's adorable. I just had to share that with you before we got down to business!

Are Internet Marketers the World's Best Liars?
They are if your definition of lying is the ability to stretch the truth to the breaking point. They're really just Direct Marketers in disguise (albeit a very thin disguise... you weren't fooled, were you?). And the secret of Direct Marketing is in the copy. Direct Marketers either learn to write their own copy or hire copywriters.
The best Internet marketing gurus are great copywriters... or they know where to hire great copywriters. The ones who are copywriters keep large "swipe" files of great sales letters and study copywriting the way Tiger Woods studies golf... fanatically!
The products they create are incidental. These guys could sell you anything. That's not to say what they're selling is bad, or junk, or useless (some is, of course), but you need to face something. Your road to riches on the Internet will come to an end quickly if you don't learn good copywriting skills, or find out where to hire a good copywriter. Factor this cost in at the beginning of your online career and you won't spend a fortune on one ebook after another, getting nowhere fast... except closer to broke, of course.
Let's see, a good copywriter? Well, Paul Myers wrote Mark Joyner's "Farewell Package." I've heard Michel Fortin is "the best." Grady Smith calls his site Cheap Copy. Tell him Andrea Wilson sent you! He's a very good copywriter. Kevin Bidwell of All-In-One-Business.com is another excellent copywriter.
If you've already done some studying, there's a section on copywriting in Kevin's "Success Secrets Course" which may just do the trick for you. (But first, check your hard drive for ebooks on copywriting. We've all got a few stored there. Read 'em!)
You can also get a free excerpt from Kevin's chapter on copywriting. Scroll down Kevin's sales letter a little bit and you'll see a simple form. Sign up for a free excerpt and Kevin's newsletter. You'll get a small taste of the kind of step-by-step teaching that Kevin does in his e-course and in his coaching class (although he expects a little more of you in the coaching class, which is why taking the e-course first is such a big plus).
Here's just one of Kevin's testimonials: << Kevin, I have just finished the Success Secrets Course. What a blast! It has helped me so much to understand the UN-understandable. My sister-in-law and myself have just started our own Internet business. We have been on the Internet for some time, doing this program and that program. Nothing to show for it. We now see why! Thank you so much. I have to admit that Shari is just in awe over this course. She has told me all along, "You gotta read this, it's AMAZING." - Cathy Glendenning, Georgia >>
And here's an amazing (and I mean AMAZING!) free gift from Kevin to me to you!
Happy marketing!

How To Choose the Right Internet Marketing Coach for YOU!
(Just a short lesson for you. These are much easier to do as a blog!)
Last night I finished ten weeks of coaching with Kevin Bidwell of All-In-One-Business.com. I met two dozen really nice people, all at different levels in their online marketing "careers." I now have:
- a binder with a clear, easy-to-follow, step-by-step plan for successful Internet marketing
- a long list of great resources I didn't know existed
- some wonderful products and software - most of them entirely free, the rest at an unbelievable discount (e.g., $97 for a $397 product; 2-for-1 for a $299 product)
- a much better perspective on Internet marketing
- a very clear direction to head in
- a whole bunch of potential customers, joint venture partners, friends and colleagues.
I was easily able to put into practice many of the ideas Kevin taught us. It was rewarding watching people sign up for the autoresponder series for the product we sold as a group (a great ebook called Save The Marriage). I do hope some people's marriages are better as a result.
I learned that my attitudes of "just do something" and "never give up" are valuable. But more importantly, I learned how to shorten the learning curve and get out there and make money right away... instead of two years down the road.
I just wish I'd hired a coach at the beginning, instead of two years down the road! Think how much further ahead I'd be today! I'd have saved myself many thousands of dollars in products and services I didn't need (but didn't know I didn't need). I'd have built my mailing list in a completely different way. I'd have hired a virtual assistant from the get-go, instead of doing it all myself. I'd have built a more focused Web site... like NicheHunt.com (but it took me two years to decide to build that site!). I'd have bought "Site Build It!" at the beginning instead of two years later.
I may not have learned HTML, I may not have become a Web designer, but I'd have understood right away how to find a profitable niche market... and I'd have been making money right off the bat. I love the Web design part of my business, but there are only 24 hours in every day. A service business is limited by the number of hours you can work unless you start hiring people to help you. And this is not the dream of most people who want to work at home. They're not interested in starting a corporation; they just want to make a nice living, spend more time with their kids and live a better lifestyle.
By the way, if you're thinking that coaching is too expensive, think again. Coaching is the best money you can spend and it's worth every penny. Just take care as to whom you hire. I had to "fire" my first coach because I felt I wasn't getting my money's worth. His style didn't suit me, the classes were held at a time I could rarely attend, there was no curriculum, no plan. Everything was left very loose; too loose for me.
I needed some structure around the coaching. I needed someone to say "now do this, now do that." Kevin Bidwell, on the other hand, produced notes for each class and gave us very specific homework to do based on the lesson for that week. The lessons led us through the logical steps to marketing success. Every week we met for three hours via video-conference (that's thirty hours of training!). We listened to Kevin's lesson, asked questions, took notes, brainstormed, and became our own cheering section. We also shared our frustrations, our successes, our ideas and our resources. We even beta-tested a new product by one of our own group. (I should be able to offer you this niftly little application shortly. All of you who are online marketers will find it very useful.)
All in all, Kevin was less expensive than my first coach (the one I "fired"), but gave far greater value. So, how do YOU choose a coach... whether it's an Internet marketing coach, a lifestyles coach or a coach for your daughter's soccer team? ASK QUESTIONS. Lots and lots of questions. If you're hiring an Internet marketing coach, here are some questions to ask:- How long have you been coaching?
- What is your success rate?
- What is your coaching strategy, plan or program?
- How many classes are you offering? And how long will each class run?
- What day and time will teleclasses or video-conferences be held?
- Will classes be regularly scheduled?
- How often will classes be held?
- How many other students will there be?
- Is one-on-one coaching available?
- Is there provision for students to make up for missed classes?
- Will there be lessons available online that students can print out?
- Will transcripts of the lessons be made available to the class?
- Will classes be well-managed so they don't turn into chit-chat sessions?
- What kind of follow-up will there be after the classes are over?
- Are "graduates" able to take advanced classes?
- Will students be encouraged to communicate with one another outside of class?
- How much does the coaching cost?
- Is there a payment plan?
- Is there a money-back guarantee?
- Are there any hidden costs (e.g., long distance phone charges)?
- What exactly does a student receive for their money besides the class time (e.g., freebies, discounts, deals, resources, etc.)?
Happy marketing!

What Happened to the August and September Issues of This Newsletter?
I must apologize... August and September were incredibly busy and October is going exactly the same way. I'm not complaining, just letting you know one reason why there was no newsletter for the last two months. You can see what I've been up to here:
http://www.ezwaysprayvitamins.com
http://www.galaxywave.com (autism treatment)
http://www.adamtechnology.net (remote vibrational healing)
http://rare-breeds-bc.com (brand new - prototype only)
Those are my latest projects. Note: GalaxyWave.com and ADAMTechnology.net are sister sites.
The other reason there was no newsletter recently is because a few AOL subscribers reported me to my ISP for spam. These people were opt-in subscribers who chose to push the Spam button on their AOL interface, or they genuinely forgot that they subscribed. My ISP said one more report and they'd shut down my account for 30 days! Since then, I've been searching for a solution. I found a couple. This "blog" is one of the ways around the spam filters. (I got this idea from Internet marketing guru Carl Galletti). I can send you a simple email with a link and thereby bypass the spam filters. I can also update my blog whenever I want (easier than a "formal" monthly newsletter), so you might hear from me a bit more often. It's fun, too!
I also moved my list from my PC to a list host (Topica Email Publisher

Internet Entrepreneurs: Avoid "Blind Sheep" Marketing
If you want your online business to succeed, you have to give it your own twist, not follow someone else like a blind sheep. In Internet marketing, as in anything else in life, there are always those who manage to leap into the forefront with a new idea, or with a new angle on an old idea. Then along come the rest of us, and like blind sheep, we follow these gurus, expecting to reap exactly the same rewards. The problem is it doesn't work that way because:
- We are no longer unique in the marketplace. The particular guru we're following got there first.
- We aren't selling the same product or service.
- Even if we're selling our guru's product as an affiliate, we're only keeping part of the profit. So we're not likely to make as much money.
- We aren't going to sell our product (or our guru's product for that matter) in exactly the same way as our guru sells his product. We don't have the same mailing list, the same skills, the same tools, the same system.
- We're never going to follow our guru's advice word-for-word or step-by-step. You and I will do it differently even if we've bought the same "Business in a Box."
Yes, if you do it right, it does pay to follow the gurus around. Some Internet marketers have become very successful this way. In short, they became Internet marketing seminar junkies. Seminars and workshops are by far the best places to find the secrets to online success. However, you have to be prepared to spend a small fortune before you make your own fortune. And, of course, the seminar junkies who are now successful, put their own twist on it.
Joel Christopher, a great success story, became the "MasterList Builder." Joel rubs elbows with the gurus all the time as a result of his seminar addiction. It sure paid off in spades for him, but it wouldn't have done him any good if he'd tried to be the next Terry Dean or Marlon Sanders.
Making money on the Internet is not that difficult if you follow the basic principles. Just remember, following every Internet guru around like a blind sheep could bankrupt you before you figure out the real secret to Internet marketing. What's the secret? Put your own twist on what's already working.
Here are seven basic principles to follow. If you accomplish these, your success is guaranteed.
- Find your niche market. We have lots of resources for finding your niche market on our Web site: NicheHunt.com.
- Make sure your niche market spends money on products or services like yours. This is a very important piece of research. If your target market doesn't have money to spend or doesn't spend money on that kind of product, pick a different product to market! Articles on niche marketing can be found here.
- Build a mailing list. How? Capture email addresses on your Web site, write an ezine, purchase opt-in subscribers. Here's a great resource.
- Advertise. Where? Online classifieds, ezines, list services, print media. Put your URL on everything you send out whether it's on paper or in digital format. Here are some ideas.
- Track ad results carefully so you know what's working. Use a spreadsheet, or purchase software designed for this purpose.
- Follow-up, follow-up, follow-up. There are many theories around as to how many contacts it takes before someone will buy from you, but I've heard it's between five and nine.
Here's a true story to help you understand what I mean. Once upon a time, I downloaded a trial copy of a wonderful autoresponder called "Postmaster Express" by Online Automation. Online Automation started emailing me to see how I liked it. After the trial was over, they kept emailing me... and emailing me. When I was finally in the market (several MONTHS later!) to make a buying decision on an autoresponder, guess who came to mind? Did I buy from them? Yes. They'd been in my face for months. They didn't give up... and they got the sale. This is an important lesson. - Have more than one product or service to offer, so if one dries up, you don't starve. If you truly have only one product or service, think of other ways to attract new customers: re-write stale sales copy, revamp your web site, get creative with your advertising.
For instance, if you're a chiropractor, be creative in your advertising. Target different segments of your market: today baby-boomers, tomorrow seniors. Or start a new fashion: "New Moms: How to Stay on Your Feet Longer and Enjoy it More."
Don't forget to look at your own interests and skills. Maybe you love participating in forums frequented by people who'd benefit from your product. It's easy for you to chat with them and they grow to trust you. The next thing you know, they're buying from you. Do you have to learn to write press releases? Maybe not.

If you or I do exactly what everyone else is doing, we'll be blind sheep, using stale methods to sell stale ideas. Follow the basic principles, get advice on ways to accomplish each one. Then put your own twist on them and stand out from the flock.
Happy marketing!
