Creating a Fully Functional Home Office
- by Nyall Bakk
[From Andrea Wilson: I found some good pieces of advice in
this little home business article. There are two traps home
business people can run into: being a workaholic (the work
is always just a few steps away) or lacking motivation to
accomplish what's need (it's hard to crack the whip on yourself!).
As with all things in life, moderation is the answer. The
author of this article calls it being reasonable.
As a small business owner, it's harder to accomplish moderation
than you might think, but in the end it will save you from
burning out, alientating friends and family and losing your
passion for your business. So take this author's advice seriously!

Individuals worldwide are breaking the chains of the corporate
world, in order to pursue a career that gives them a sense
of self-worth and more time with their family. Operating a
successful home-based business takes commitment, know how,
and plenty of patience. Every day can be a challenge if you're
not prepared.
If you have a family start of by running your plans past
them and get everyone excited and on board for your new venture.
Your family should clearly understand and accept the limitations
and boundaries you have set forth for your new workspace.
It is important that you have an area where you can work quietly
and undisturbed.
Getting Your Office Ready
With a fully functional office, you're ready for any challenge.
Begin with the right equipment: computer; printer; scanner;
fax machine; telephone line; calculator; bookcase; file cabinet;
and office supplies. A comfortable office is the key to working
effectively. Soft lighting and the proper chair can make all
the difference.
Get Your Own Address
Avoid using your home address as your business address. Although
you~re working from home, it is important that you portray
a professional image. Some places like MailBoxes Inc.,offer
a mailbox with a street address and suite number. It can be
a hassle going out to get your mail, but in the end, it is
worth it.
Manage Your Time
While initially you may think that you'll have much more
time working from home, many people find that time management
becomes more difficult. There are always things to do at home
other than work. It is important to set aside time for work
and time for family. Be sure not to let these two mix.
Try to organize your time by using a daily planner. Schedule
in time for breaks, lunch, and family. It is important to
keep track of all the tasks you plan to complete during the
day. You can even use Microsoft Outlook to set reminders and
keep a task list that you can check off when items are completed.
Managing your time is important to make sure you get everything
done in a timely manner.
If you need to do business calls try and do them when everyone
else is out. It can be very distracting to have others around.
If someone else is always home be sure to keep your office
door closed and ask family members to stay out.
Be Reasonable
Rather than doing everything yourself consider investing
in software programs that can help you manage your time more
effectively. For instance, rather than keeping track of inventory
through paper means, get some software that does it for you.
You can quickly run reports on a variety of data that will
help you save time and energy.
Make sure to not overload yourself by planning too many things
in one day. Set priorities and goals that are reasonable.
You don't want to spend all your time in the office.
If you find yourself getting bogged down in clerical duties,
ask family members for help. It will save you time and money
and they will enjoy being needed. This will help your business
become more efficient.
By taking time initially to set up your home office, you
will save time and more effectively be able to tackle challenges
and obstacles in the future. Remember that running your home
office takes a lot of hard work and patience.
